When beginning to plan a wedding it’s easy to lock down the big ticket items pretty quick – venue, photographer, dress, food. But planning a wedding, whether big or small, comes with alot of unexpected hidden details. For me personally one of the biggest details that took an unexpected amount of effort was the music. When I got married last September I split wedding planning with P basically 50/50. He picked the food, I picked my dress. He picked the cake, I obviously picked the photographer and all the big decisions seemed pretty effortless. Until we were weeks away from saying I do and it clicked that I didnt know what song we were going to have our first dance to, or what I was going to walk down the aisle to.
For some people these decisions may be super easy as a song may already be applied to the soundtrack of your life. But if that was the case we would have had our first dance to Remix to Ignition by R.Kelly. So I did what any bride to be would do and hit Pinterest, and I hit it hard. But unfortunately all the lists for First Dance Songs were extremely repetitive and a little outdated if I do say so myself. So I spent many nights on the couch browsing Spotify asking P to pause and listen to little clips as we debated if we wanted to be forever tied to these soundbytes.
We eventually settled on the following list:
Processional – Cant Help Falling in Love by Haley Reinhart
Recessional – This Will Be (an Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole
First Dance – I’m With You by Vance Joy
Father/Daughter – I Loved Her First by Heartland
Over the years I’ve heard so many beautiful combinations of choices and learned that a great song can add so much emotion to these moments. Did you know that recent studies have also found that music engages neural networks in the brain which ties to emotion which become MEAMs (Music Evoked Autobiographical Memories.) Making music the perfect way to evoke emotion and take you straight back to your favourite moments.
The secret to curating the perfect playlist is to choose songs that speak to you as a couple. Something that makes you feel at home, aligns closely with your story, or one that echoes your feelings for one another. It may seem like a small task but these notes will carry themselves through your life and forever be tied to a part of your story. So don’t just choose your current fave top 40 bop (save that for the party.) Instead, decide on something timeless that you both trust to take you back to this moment in time for the rest of your lives.
I’ve compiled some of my favourite songs for first dances, processionals and recessionals (as well as parent dances) into the following playlists to hopefully make your selection process a little easier! I’d love to know if you end up using any of these or if you have your own fun songs that you’d like to add to the list!
